In Chinese, both goat and sheep are called yang, a word also associated with growth, warmth, and light. Together with two boys, these animals may be read as a visual pun extending warm wishes for a good New Year. Red seals along both sides of the panel state that it was in the collection of
the emperor Qinalong (r. 1736–95).
