This is one of Goya’s most engaging male portraits. Tiburcio Pérez, a friend of the aging artist, was an architect, responsible for (among other projects) the design of the medical school on the Calle de Atocha in Madrid. Goya painted this portrait after recovering from a serious illness in 1819–20. Pérez's rolled-up sleeves and slight smile suggest an informality, directness, and warmth that are rare in Goya's oeuvre, and convey the affection the artist held for his sitter.
