This group portrait and conversation piece is unusual in the oeuvre of Vigée Le Brun. It was commissioned by the marquise de Rougé, seated at the center, and exalts the values of friendship and family. The painter, at the pinnacle of her art, renders the sitters’ gentle faces and gleaming apparel with a virtuosic command of her medium.
