After a long, productive career of painting and printmaking in which he focused primarily on historical, literary, and political subjects, Menzel turned his attention to chronicling figures of everyday life. The present studies exploring his sitter’s idiosyncratic expressions are a tribute to Menzel’s consummate skill as a draftsman.
