Using red and golden browns in a painting both pastoral and Neoclassical in inspiration, Vigée Le Brun presents the marquise (1766–1837) as a milkmaid. She wears a straw hat and a tightly cinched bodice over a chemise, with a wide skirt. She leans on an earthenware amphora beside a wellhead. Her powdered hair confers maturity beyond her twenty years.
