Lady Ossulston (1782/3–1865) was born into a life of privilege at Versailles. On the eve of the Revolution, her family fled France and became dependent on the charity of acquaintances abroad. In Britain, the sitter was cared for by her grandmother’s great friend, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, who probably arranged her marriage. The apparently mild-mannered newlywed is simply dressed in modern Neoclassical style.
