Delacroix envisioned Jacob and the angel entwined and struggling in a small clearing beneath a lush canopy of trees in his interpretation of the Book of Genesis (32: 24-32). The composition assumes the shape of the arched wall in the chapel of the Holy Angels in the church of Saint-Sulpice, Paris, for which it was designed. This is the most developed of the preparatory sketches Delacroix made for the subject in 1850 and was very likely submitted for approval to officials at the Prefecture of the Seine.
