In Venice, Vigée Le Brun reestablished contact with Dominique Vivant Denon, a diplomat, engraver, and member of the Académie royale, and at his request created this revealing portrait of his mistress, Isabella Marini. Using a relaxed style for a gift to a friend, she painted the work in service of a relationship she knew to be secret, creating a portrait that would fan the ardor of its owner.
