Vigée Le Brun spent the worst period of the Reign of Terror (1893–94) in Vienna, where news of the imprisonments and executions in France plunged the émigré community into mourning. There she painted the duchesse de Guiche (1768–1803), a royalist born at the château of Versailles who would later serve the comte d’Artois in his efforts to restore the Bourbon monarchy. Using a muted palette, the artist captures the melancholy air of a young woman watching the world of her childhood vanish.
