Portrait de Madame Cézanne, 1890 |
Portrait de Madame Cézanne, 1890, Paul Cézanne (Aix-en Provence 1839-1906) at Musée de l'Orangerie
Among the portraits of Hortense Fiquet, this one occupies a place between domestic and more complicated portraits. Madame Cézanne is shown sitting in a simple armchair, her hands resting on her lap in a very moody pose. As usual, his face was completely expressionless and somewhat unattractive. This portrait is painted quickly with brush strokes that are irregular and visible.
Cézanne uses a huge economic means here:
a luminous beam is generated, not by lightly painted impasto, but by leaving visible support. This technique gives the volume and life of a very simple black Hortense outfit.
The background is minimal and indeterminate, shown in simple blue and green wrinkles. Only brush strokes and subtle variations of green and blue colors make it alive. Here again, the painting was left unfinished.
The model's frontal view is subtly adjusted to the seat placed slightly at an angle, which introduces a slight imbalance into the composition.
