Herman Doomer was a successful cabinetmaker, working in the imported ebony fashionable in seventeenth-century Amsterdam. At roughly the same time that Rembrandt painted this portrait of Doomer and a companion piece of his wife (now in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg), the couple’s son Lambert was an apprentice in the artist’s studio. The portrait is in an exceptional state of preservation, with bold passages of impasto marking out the sitter’s linen ruff.
